The Ardèche Gorges are considered one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe. Stretching 32 km, they feature limestone cliffs reaching a staggering height of 250 meters, along with protected flora and fauna. The Ardèche Gorges are a place to discover and rediscover, with a multitude of iconic sites to visit.
In this article, we’ll give you an overview of everything you need to know about the legendary Ardèche Gorges before you set off on your adventure.
The Ardèche Gorges: breathtaking landscapes that attract thousands of visitors every year
The Ardèche Gorges are the region’s main attraction, thanks to the stunning scenery they offer. You’ll enjoy discovering the towering cliffs there, which you won’t be able to help but admire, with their varied hues ranging from white and beige to gray and ochre in certain spots. These cliffs are adorned with lush vegetation, including holm oaks, downy oaks, Montpellier maples, wild lavender, and more.
The Ardèche River flows directly through the gorges it has carved out over millions of years. Its course is generally considered to begin in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, a small village typical of the region, and end in Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. The river flows notably beneath the famous Pont d’Arc, a rock formation nearly 60 meters high, which you can admire at the start of your hike through the Ardèche Gorges.
Discover the hidden treasures of the Ardèche Gorges during your hike
The Ardèche Gorges are not just a landscape that will stay with you forever. They also tell a story, with powerful reminders of the past. Think, for example, of the many caves and archaeological sites that dot the area.
The Grand Site of L’Aven d’Orgnac is the region’s most iconic landmark, as it is a one-of-a-kind cave discovered 90 years ago. It offers visitors vast underground chambers dotted with majestic limestone formations. These formations are strangely reminiscent of the architectural grandeur found in cathedrals. There is also a museum that chronicles the many discoveries of Paleolithic artifacts, including flint tools carved by our ancestors 350,000 years ago, as well as Neolithic bronze tools.
And that’s not all: during your walks, you can spot limestone formations shaped like animals, or pass by the dolmens of the Ardèche Gorges, which also date back to the Neolithic era and were erected by the people who lived in the region many years ago. These dolmens are actually collective tombs, which were used for funeral rites and the burials of our ancestors.
As you can see, visiting the Ardèche Gorges is both an opportunityto admire France’s beautiful landscapes and to learn more about its history.
How can you explore the Ardèche Gorges? There are plenty of options available
You can explore the Ardèche Gorges on foot, by bike, or by canoe or kayak! If you choose the first option, be sure to dress appropriately, as the trails can be steep.
Exploring the Ardèche Gorges on Foot
The Gorges Trail is the most popular and runs along the Ardèche River. It offers breathtaking views of the gorges and is suitable for all fitness levels, as the hike can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on your preference. The Dolmens Trail, as its name suggests, allows you to explore the famous Neolithic structures.
The Ardèche Gorges by Bike
You can also explore the Ardèche Gorges by bike, which will allow you to cover more ground and take a slightly more active approach to your exploration. There are various bike trails available, suitable for all skill levels. We particularly recommend taking the Route des Gorges (between Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche), which offers a panoramic view of the gorges. Or the mountain bike trail, which is more technical but takes you through varied landscapes: woods, hills, clearings, and more.
Canoeing and kayaking through the Ardèche Gorges from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc to Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche
Finally, canoeing and kayaking are popular activities in the region and are offered by many centers. You’ll certainly be able to paddle down the Ardèche River using this fun and unique mode of transportation!
The classic descent starts in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc and ends in Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, covering a total distance of 24 km. It will take you between one and two days, with the option to camp along the way. You can also choose the shorter route, which is 8 to 12 kilometers long, allowing you to return to your accommodation the same evening.
Please note that there are many other activities available in the area. For example, you can go ATV riding, rock climbing, zip-lining, abseiling, and much more.
A few practical tips before hiking in the Ardèche Gorges
The Ardèche Gorges offer a particularly stunning display of vegetation in the spring and fall. Photography enthusiasts will want to visit during these seasons. For summer vacationers, we recommend bringing water, hats, and, of course, sunscreen. It will be very hot!
Don’t forget to bring, at the very least, a good pair of hiking boots if you plan to explore the gorges on foot. Some trails are steep, and the rocky terrain can make walking difficult. Be sure to bring a backpack that fits you well and consider using hiking poles to help you maintain your balance in the trickiest spots.
Also, please remember that the Ardèche Gorges are a protected natural site. Out of respect for the area’s exceptional flora and fauna, please do not leave ANY trash behind after your visit. If you’re lucky, you might spot rare species such as the Bonelli’s eagle, the peregrine falcon, the ocellated lizard (the largest in Europe), or even European beavers.
To make your stay as enjoyable as possible, we also recommend staying at the Domaine de St Clair, a luxury hotel that will provide you with all the comfort you need after a long day of walking and exploring. There you’ll find luxurious rooms, a wellness center (with a steam room, pools, hot tubs, facials, massages…), golf courses, numerous outdoor sports activities, and a restaurant serving high-quality cuisine. Feel free to check out our offers to make your stay in the Ardèche even more memorable.
